Nigerian Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are expected to meet on Monday (today) following the leadership crisis rocking the main opposition party.

DAILY POST reports that the crisis escalated on Friday following the suspension and counter suspension of party leaders.

The National Working Committee of the party led by the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum had suspended the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN.

A few hours after the announcement, the Ajibade faction suspended Damagum and the national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, deepening the crisis that has been rocking the party since after the 2023 general elections.

Subsequently, a factional PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Yayari Mohammed emerged.

Despite court order restraining the party from removing Damagum, Mohammed, who belongs to the camp of the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, resumed office on Sunday.

While Damagum, a loyalist of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT Nyesom Wike has the backing of at least four governors, Mohammed has the support of six governors.

According to reports, two of the 13 governors are neutral. They are neither supporting Atiku or Wike’s camps.

The PDP governors are to convene an emergency meeting today to resolve the lingering crisis.

The failure of the governors to amicably resolve the issues may lead to a more damaging crisis in the party.
