The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a trigger-happy officer who allegedly killed one Oyebuchi Anene, a resident of Byazhin community in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.
DAILY POST gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday near Haj Estate, where the deceased lived with his young wife and one daughter.
Trouble started when the deceased, who was on his way home, hit an okada man and his passenger in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased stopped and made sure that the Okada rider and his passenger were okay before leaving the scene to his home in the Haj Estate.
However, some policemen stormed the area and demanded that the deceased follow them to a station.
The development ensued an altercation between the deceased and the policemen.
One of the officers reportedly shot a teargas canister into the eye of the deceased at a very close range.
He was rushed to the Kubwa General Hospital after which he was referred to National Hospital, where he eventually died on Thursday.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Friday.
She said the police officer, who was responsible for the “accidental discharge” is currently in custody.
The PPRO said, the FCT Police Commissioner, CP Benneth Igweh “unequivocally condemns the unprofessional and disheartening conduct of the police officer and assures the family and the public of swift justice”.
