Calabar Boat Accident: Local divers, marine police recover 3 more bodies

The bodies of the three medical students who were missing when a boat conveying 14 of them capsized on Saturday in the Calabar waterways have now been recovered from the waters.

The search continued throughout Sunday afternoon when it was believed that the bodies would pop up after 24 hours from when they were drowned until early Monday morning.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Gyogon Augustine Grimah who spoke to journalists at the Marina Resort in Calabar explained, “When the bodies were sighted, our marine police rose to the scene, with efforts from the local divers, the bodies have been recovered.

“Three students were missing and we did not rest since that day. The rescue effort continued day and night and this morning we are here to let you know that the bodies have been recovered and you can see them around me.

“The locals did a very marvellous job and they have just delivered the three bodies to us.”

The police boss added that the state government and the police have already taken measures to safeguard lives and property in the area.

Meanwhile, Governor, Prince Bassey Otu has directed the immediate shutdown of the resort and questioning of the management over standards and safety.
