FAAN, airline operators to address service gaps at airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on Thursday met with the Airline Operators of Nigeria and the Airline Operating Committee to find solutions to service gaps at airports across the country.

The new Managing Director of FAAN, Capt Rabiu Yadudu, said the meeting became necessary to re-affirm the agency’s commitment to the improvement of services at airports, and to solicit airline operators’ cooperation and support.

“FAAN is already taking bold steps in addressing gaps in our processes and procedures by collaborating with the International Civil Aviation Organisation, through its Airport Service Quality programme,” he said.

Yadudu requested the airline associations to nominate two members to work in a committee that would be constituted immediately alongside FAAN officials to drive the delivery of improved services at airports.

According to him, the AON and the AOC are primary stakeholders which informed engaging them first among numerous others.

He stated that the new management would be open to advice and constructive criticisms, and concentrate on delivering structured, time-bound, sustainable and improved services to all stakeholders.

The Chairman of AON, Capt, Nogie Meggison, said airline operators would cooperate with the agency towards delivering improved services at the airports and helping to develop the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos into a hub.

Reacting to Wednesday’s aborted landing of Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 777-300 aircraft, Yadudu said it was a normal safety procedure in the global aviation industry.

According to him, the decision of the pilot to abort the first landing at the airport was the industry standard.

He said that pilots were encouraged to go for a go-around if the situation called for it, as long as the aircraft had enough fuel.

Yadudu said pilots were trained to go-around in such cases, adding that it was not an abnormal situation to have generated the controversies it did on social media.

He said, “A go-around is a normal procedure, not an abnormal situation. Even, abnormal situations are even catered for by the aircraft manufacturers and even the system. In all procedures, you have redundancy, which is also known as alternatives.”
